Year 5 have made a wonderful start to the year.
All the children have been very enthusiastic about our learning journey, ‘We Shall Not Surrender’, which is all about WW2. We began our learning journey in September with a visit from the Home Front Bus. It was exciting to board an original double decker bus equipped with a whole range of WW2 settings which included a replica corner shop, 1940’s sitting room and a street from the era. The visit provided a great starting point to begin our WW2 learning.
Throughout Terms 1 and 2 many of the children have brought in photographs, newspapers cuttings, ration books and a whole host of other information and artefacts relating to relatives that were involved in WW2. It was fascinating to hear their stories and we have been amazed by how many of us have links to WW2.
At the beginning of Term 2, we visited ‘The Battle of Britain Museum’. We had an incredible day out learning about this very important part of WW2. The museum has the world’s largest collection of Battle of Britain memorabilia and it was fascinating to see such a vast collection. We especially liked seeing the Spitfires, Hurricanes, Messerschmitt’s, V1 and V2’s, Anderson shelters, Morrison shelters and Bell shelters.
For Remembrance Day, we created and recorded a special Remembrance Day Assembly. We remembered all those whose lives have been affected by conflict since WW1, and in particular those who died. You can watch our video below:
This term we have also taken part in Forest School and have loved going out to the woods. We have particularly focused on our team building skills and have been orienteering, den building and playing games specifically designed for group work. We have had a great time.
We are looking forward to continuing our learning throughout the year.
